Red sky at night

The Shades of Sunset

San Francisco’s West-side sunsets were sometimes the only bright spot in a dismal pandemic year.

San Francisco’s Sunset District is aptly named, if not always appreciated by its tonier neighbors to the east. But what the far West of the City might lack in cachet, it more than compensates for with a painterly showcase of stunning sunsets drenched in multiple hues, from pulsating magentas and glowing golds to a dozen shades of gray and violet. During the pandemic year of 2020, these fleeting bursts of color were sometimes the only bright moments of many dark days. Here is a visual salute to the sky art that kept us company and kept us hoping that better times lay ahead.
